Herbert J. Wegner, 97, Wausau, died April, 27, 2012, at Mt. View Care center, under the care of Aspirus Hospice and Comfort Care.
Born September 12, 1914 to the late William, and Pauline (Goellner) Wegner, Herbert was the youngest of seven children in this family. He always had fun with his siblings; they enjoyed "picking" on each other. After graduating high school, he went on to school to become a Tool and Die maker. Eventually he would meet and marry, Regina Killinger. They were wed in Milwaukee, WI. on July 1, 1939, and celebrated 68 years of marriage before her death in 2008. Together they raised their three children, and shared the joys that grandchildren and great-grandchildren bring.
A strong-willed, and loving man with a great sense of humor is how his children will remember him. He enjoyed many things; his favorite was driving whether it was Sunday drives with the family, the one day vacations, or especially driving his tractor on the farm in Spencer. His children would say he only had a farm so he could have tractors and big equipment. He loved the outdoors; he liked to take walks, and using a chainsaw to cut wood. Church was a big part of his life, he would go every Sunday that he could, he served as a board member, and an Elder. He would also surprise people by reciting poems and prayers in German, which was something he learned in childhood listening to his parents, aunts and uncles. In his later life Herb's favorite things were talking politics and relating stories about his life in Butternut, WI.
Herbert will be missed by his two daughters, Pauline (Ted) Schnese, Stoughton, Kathryn (Dr. Earl) Zabel, Wausau; one son, Paul (Sharon) Wegner, Eleva, WI.; six grandchildren, Therese (Michael) Magnus, Nicole (Scott) Bruer, Christopher (Jenny) Zabel, Marla (Jason) Kolbeck, Wendy (Dan) Engum, and Lana (Loren) Westphal; nine great-grandchildren, Phillip, Natalie, Benjamin, William, Riley, Lillian, Reece, Colin, and Kennadi.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Regina; one grandson, Timothy Schnese; four brothers, and two sisters.
