Alice Hackbarth

October 10, 1909 — February 13, 2010

Alice Hackbarth, 100, died Saturday, February 13, 2010 at Wausau Manor Nursing Home, Wausau.

Alice Stella Ainsworth was born October 10, 1909 in Wausau to the late Newton Elmer and Stella (Kemps) Ainsworth Jr. She graduated from the Mosinee High School and went on to Normal School receiving her teaching certification. Alice taught school for two years before marrying Leland Carl Hackbarth on August 17, 1929 in Wausau. The couple loved spending time together at their cabin up north fishing year round. Alice and Leland celebrated 50 loving years together prior to his death August 30, 1979.

Throughout her life, Alice was a very independent woman. She thought nothing of walking or riding the bus around town to get where she needed to go. Her independence kept her at home into her mid-nineties when she finally moved to Applegate Terrace. One of Alice’s passions was baking cookies, often treating family, friends and neighbors with a variety of fresh baked goodies. Alice was very talented and artistic, loving to create various arts and crafts. Her greatest accomplishment was making over 5,000 sock monkeys over a 50+ year span, even making clothes and Packers outfits for them. Often these little treasures were given away to family and friends, but later Alice sold them through the Talent Shop where she volunteered. Since she was born, Alice was a lifelong Methodist, and attended First United Methodist for much of her life and was active in the Ladies Aid and Friendship Club.

Alice is survived by her sister, Dorothy Hackbarth of Wausau; nieces and nephew, Virginia (John) Runkel of Lake Havasu City, AZ, William (Cheryl) Hackbarth of Wausau, Jeanette (Jeff) Beck of Wausau, Sue (Dave) Green of Wausau, and Nancy (Dennis) Mumper of DePere; and many more extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 1:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church, Wausau. Pastor Gerald Morris will be officiating. You may sign our family guestbook at www.helke.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the “Alice Hackbarth Memorial Fund for the Talent Shop”, The Talent Shop, 217 Scott Street, Wausau, WI 54403.
