Areli "Babe" Ladin Schuelke, 92, 1002 Woodward Avenue, Rothschild, died at home December 5th, under the loving care of her son & daughter-in-law, Jay & Julie Ladin & Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
Babe was born October 12, 1915, in Ironwood, MI, the only child of William and Laina Aalto. Despite the loss of her father when she was 14, and the depression, Babe had a wonderful childhood growing up in the "UP". She credited her longevity to the "good Northwoods air" and her daily glass of wine.
Babe married Harold (Art Lynn) Ladin in Dubuque, IA, August 17, 1940. They divorced in 1974. She then married Karl Schuelke in 1982; He preceded her in death in 1992.
Babe was an independent woman who was often described as a "feisty Finlander from the UP". Her dream of visiting Finland and meeting her Finnish cousins was realized at the age of 82. She was proud of having "sisu" (Finnish for toughness).
Babe was very creative and enjoyed painting in oils and was a life long knitter. She was also an avid reader.
Besides her husband Karl, Babe was preceded in death by her former husband Harold (2000), and a son Richard Lee Ladin (1969). She is survived by her sons Jay (Julie) Ladin, Rothschild; David Ladin, Newhall, CA: daughters Shirley (Jerry) Mortensen, Rothschild: Linda Ladin, Wausau. Survivors also include grandchildren Renee Mortensen, Minneapolis; Gerald Mortensen, Chicago; Matthew Ladin, Dallas; Jordan Ladin and Tevia Ladin, Wausau; Richard (Christine) Marten, Raynham, MA; Valerie (Tom) Reilly, Nipomo, CA; Ricky Ladin, CA. She is also survived by four great grandchildren.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services for the care and support given to Babe on her final journey, and to Dr. Larry Gordon and his staff for their assistance and support.
Babe's family is blessed with a long list of wonderful "Babe" stories which will keep them laughing for many years to come.
