Arnold Hoag

Arnold W. H. Hoag died on August 26, 2016 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

He was born June 11, 1920 in Wausau to the late James and Anna (Falske) Hoag. Arnie worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Postal Service for 40 years. He married Stella H. Sauer in St Louis, Missouri on June 16, 1942. She preceded him in death on January 24, 2002.
Arnie was also preceded in death by one brother, William H. (Emerene) Hoag and two sisters, Esther (George) Mitchell and Marie (John) Gundrum. He is survived by his son, Lt Colonel Jesse S. (Toni) Hoag, USAF Retired , two granddaughters, Melonie (Patrick) Bourque and Jennifer Zachau, and seven great grandchildren, Taylor, Adriana, Parker, Vivian, Ashe', Angel, and Anthony and many nieces and nephews. After his wife's death, Savanna Schaepe became his closest wonderful friend and companion and life continued playing cards, dancing, attending sporting events, visiting casinos and dining out.

Arnie served in the U.S. Navy for 38 months during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations as Yeoman First Class (Y1C). He enjoyed sports in his younger days, primarily baseball, bowling, skiing, horseshoes, and golfing. He was the starting pitcher on the first Wausau High School baseball team. Arnie pitched for several Wisconsin Valley baseball teams and the Northern Minor League. He pitched a no-hit no-run game in the Wausau Centennial Baseball Tournament. He bowled on several winning Classic City League teams and bowled in several Wisconsin Valley, state, and national tournaments. Arnie won the Sportsman Club Horseshoe Tournament in 1938 and played World Horseshoe Champion Ted Allen at the former McDonald Pool area in an exhibition match. When his son joined the U.S. Air Force he visited him at many U.S. Air Force bases around the country. Arnie also enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, dining out, his cottage on Lake Nokomis, and going to shows.

He was a Life Member of the American Legion Post 10, Life Member of the VFW Post 388, Life Member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, member of the Elks Lodge 248 and a member of the Wausau York Rite of the Free and Accepted Masons Chapter 51 and the Forest Lodge 130 of the Free and Accepted Masons. Arnie was a past member of Branch 215 of the National Association of Letter Carriers where he served in all the officer positions until he became a Rural Letter Carrier Union Steward. He held all offices from president to auditor in the Wausau Postal Employees Credit Union for 30 years. He was a life-long member of St Stephens Lutheran Church where he served on the Finance Committee, Trustee, and Usher for many years.

A celebration of Arnold's life will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 1, 2016 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 512 McClellan St. Wausau. Reverend Jennifer Dahle will officiate. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until time of services. Full military rites will be performed by the American Legion Montgomery Plant Post #10. Burial will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery. You may sign our family guest book at helke.com.
