Cassius was a man who showed his love by putting the needs of his family and friends first. He was devoted to his wife and daughters and a helper to all.
He was born October 7, 1919, the son of the late Howard and Myrtle “Mertie” Belle (McKinney) Campbell. After graduation from Wausau High School, he was united in marriage, on December 28, 1940, to Elsie Mae Baumann. Together they enjoyed 69 years of marriage, committed to each other and the raising of their daughters, Judith and Mary Lou. He was drafted into World War II and proudly served in with the 12th Air Force Division, as a Private First Class, for 4 years, in the Italian Theater.
After his honorable discharge, Cassius returned home and began his career at 3M, where he worked for 37 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of 1st United Methodist Church for over 40 years. Elsie and Cassius enjoyed their vacations together to many places, including El Paso, Florida, New Orleans, and camping at Lake DuBay.
Cassius Campbell, 90, lifelong resident of Wausau, died Sunday, January 10, 2010, at Kennedy Park Medical and Rehabilitation Center, Weston.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Elsie M. Campbell, Wausau; daughters, Judith (Delbert) Hettinga, Schofield, and Mary Lou (Terry) Mather, Gardner, KS; 4 grandchildren, Lori (Matt) Hattenhauer, Dean Hettinga, Terra (Ed) Husar, and Melissa Mather; 4 great-grandchildren, Chloe Hattenhauer, and Marlee, Noah, and Ella Husar.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Eva Schlais, Ruby Sparbel, and Dorothy Radzinski; and brothers, Bill and Troy Campbell.
A memorial service celebrating Cassius’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, January 14, 2010, at the Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. Family will welcome guests beginning at 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service. The Reverend Jerry Morris, of 1st United Methodist Church, Wausau, will officiate. Burial will take place in the spring at Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau.
