Chuck was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, cutting wood, berry picking and making jam, and collecting sap for making maple syrup. He was handy and often spent time doing projects at church or for friends and family. He was an active and faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church, serving on many boards and as lay leader over the years, and was instrumental in the facility’s expansion. Chuck was also a 32nd degree Mason, and a past president of the Wisconsin Valley Shrine Club, Tripoli Temple.
For over 30 years, summer weekends and vacations would find the Bartels at Holiday Lodge; the log cabin on Squaw Lake that they shared with their friends Pat & Larry Derks of Schofield. Chuck and Cindy also traveled across the U.S. attending the American Concrete Pipe Conventions. After retiring, he and Cindy flew to Barcelona and enjoyed a wonderful Mediterranean cruise with family and friends. They made annual trips with friends to Hilton Head and Mazatlan, Mexico.
He was born January 29, 1939, in Wausau, to Evelyn (Jahsmann) Bartel and the late Arthur Bartel. Charles married Cynthia Goehring on April 6, 1963, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. He attended Trinity Lutheran Elementary School and Wausau High School, graduating in 1957. Chuck went on to the University of Wisconsin – Stout, in Menomonie, where he was active in the Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity and received a degree in Industrial Arts Education in 1961.
After college he taught woodworking and math in Watertown and West Allis High Schools. In 1964, Chuck returned to the Wausau area and was employed at Wausau Concrete Co., retiring in 2001, as Vice President of Operations.
