Darrell Holubetz

February 16, 1933 — June 25, 2015

Darrell G. "Duke" Holubetz, 82, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 25, 2015, following a brief illness at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Edna (Norton) Holubetz, his son Kevin, and his brothers Howard and Karl (Katie). He leaves his daughter, Karla (Paul) Brownell of Houston, TX, his daughter-in-law, Pamela Holubetz of St. Cloud, MN, his sister Lois (Robert) Cable of Stevens Point, WI, his brother Wayne (Julie) of Pewaukee, WI, sister-in-law Hilda Holubetz of Downers Grove, IL, five grandchildren, Megan (Aaron), Jon, David, Rachel, and Anna, and many other special family members and friends.

Darrell was born on February 16, 1933 in Stevens Point, WI, and accepted salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ at age 12 by confession of faith and baptism. In 1951 he graduated from Wausau East High School where he was sports co-editor for the newspaper, an elected member to Quill & Scroll, national honorary society for high school journalists and a track team letterman. He served as battalion and military academy bugler of the guard for the U.S. Army in Munich, Germany, and as a Public Information Officer in central France.

After earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1966, Darrell embarked on a career in recreation administration at the municipal, county, state, and federal levels. He coached the men's and women's bowling teams at St. Cloud State University to Midwest conference titles in 1968, '69, '70, '73 and '74. He was a charter member of the Wausau Jr. Ski Jumping Club, the charter chair of the Commission on Campus Organizations at UW-Eau Claire, and served terms as president, V.P. of music, secretary and historian of the Wausau Barbershop Harmony Society. He greatly enjoyed singing with the River Valley Harmonizers of Wausau as well as the Northern Gateway Chorus of Stevens Point. The friendships made with his fellow "barbershoppers" were very special to him.

He will be fondly remembered for faithfully sending greeting cards to his loved ones for any and every special occasion. He was an energetic leader of the Holubetz/Holubets/Dwyer family reunion sing alongs and his presence will surely be missed.
