Donald Sagstetter

April 24, 1941 — March 13, 2010

Donald Lee Sagstetter, 68, formerly of Wausau, died Saturday, March 13, 2010 after a long battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center.

Donald was born April 24, 1941 to the late Clarence and Edna (Knudson) Sagstetter. He served his country during the Vietnam War in the US Army. Donald married the love of his life, Shirley Strei, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wausau on August 24, 1968. The couple was blessed with the birth of their daughter, Lisa. Later in life, he was delighted with the addition of his grandson, Sam, who was the apple of his eye.

Donald was a very industrious and extremely trustworthy person whose highest praise to another was “you’re a hard worker with a good sense of humor”. Throughout his life he often worked 2-3 jobs since he disliked sitting around with nothing to do. Donald was an avid fan of Wisconsin sports, cheering on the Milwaukee Bucks, the Milwaukee Brewers and the Green Bay Packers. He had a special love of old cars, replacing the windshields in some. In his free time, Donald and Shirley liked to go to the casinos up north and in Las Vegas for harmless fun.

Donald is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Shirley; daughter, Lisa (Thomas) Degen; grandson, Samuel Degen; sister, Joyce Redmond; brother, Roger Sagstetter; sisters-in-law, Betty Imhoff and Joyce (Clifford) Brandt; special friend, Roger Wunsch; and many more extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Delores Pagel.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, March 18 at Saint Andrew Lutheran Church, Rib Mountain. Reverend Craig Swenson will be officiating. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, March 17 at the Helke Funeral Home, Wausau and conclude at 8:00 PM with visitation resuming at 10:00 AM on Thrusday at the church and lasting until the time of services. Burial will follow the funeral at Restlawn Memorial Park. You may sign our family guestbook at www.helke.com.

Memorials may be directed to The ALS Association Wisconsin Chapter, 2505 North 124th Street, Suite #105, Brookfield, WI 53005.
