Donald G. Tietz, age 71, of Wausau, passed away Friday, November 1, 2013.
Don was born on March 5, 1942 in Wausau to the late Herbert and Adeline (Holt) Tietz. He graduated from Wausau High School in 1960 and from WTI (n/k/a NTC) in 1962 with a degree in accounting. Don married Ellen Ostring on November 27, 1965 in Wausau.
He is survived by Ellen, and their three children, Kurt Tietz of Gravel Hill, Missouri; Kristin (Kevin) Janis of Wausau, and Katie (Craig) Spangler of Wausau, as well as two grandchildren, Grace Spangler and Alexander Janis. Survivors also include one sister, Jane (Eugene) Baker of Wausau.
He was a member of the National Guard for several years. He was employed for most of his adult life at Wausau Homes and subsequently, Wausau Insurance in cost allocation. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wausau. He loved spending time with his family, especially at the cottage he built. Recently, he enjoyed spending time with his three-year old granddaughter and nine month old grandson. He enjoyed telling jokes and using his quick wit – he always seemed to have a humorous comeback. He also enjoyed fishing, woodworking, baseball, spending time with friends and being the "life of the party." He derived great enjoyment from music, especially polkas, and never hesitated to jump in and sing along, even if he had to make up some of the words. He was never afraid to be himself.
A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church, 406 Grant St., Wausau, with Pastor Joy Nelson-Jeffers officiating. Family and friends may call beginning at 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau, and again at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Big Hill Cemetery, town of Berlin.
You may sign the family guestbook at www.helke.com.
A special thank you to his new friends and the staff at the Renaissance, who made him feel comfortable in recent months and who allowed him to have a quality of life he couldn't have otherwise enjoyed.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Wausau Area Parkinson's Support Group or First Presbyterian Church - Deacon's Fund.
