Doris Ida Preisig, age 100, passed away on January 8, 2019 at Wellington Place at Rib Mountain, her home for the past 6 years.
Doris was born on February 10, 1918 in Wausau to the late Walter and Emma (Mueller) Otto. She graduated from Wausau High School in 1936 and began her career that summer as a secretary at Marathon Rubber Plant. From there she went to Marathon Millwork where she stayed for the next 36 years until they closed. She finished her career at North Central Technical College as a secretary in the nursing unit until retiring in 1980.
Doris married Herman Preisig on January 3, 1970 at Zion Lutheran Church in Wausau.
After Herman and Doris retired, they traveled all over the US, including Hawaii and even a cruise to the Bahamas. They enjoyed snowmobiling, attending auctions, and spending time with family. A special treat was taking a Sunday scenic drive with their granddaughter, Racquel, and trying a new restaurant for lunch. Family was so important to Doris, and she enjoyed the many occasions when everyone was together, whether that was celebrating a holiday or just having a popcorn and card party.
Doris was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 30 years where she did countless hours of volunteer work. Volunteering was a large part of her life. She embroidered pillow cases and made quilts for Strassenfest, a fall bazaar at her church, Zion Lutheran, and became quite well known for her baked goods, especially cream puffs and fudge. Her hobbies included reading and making quilts. She made special quilts for each of her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and even one for her great granddaughter Nina’s dolly.
Faith was a significant part of Doris’s life. It sustained her throughout her many years, good times and bad, and never wavered. She was the oldest life long member of her church. Doris accomplished something that few people ever do – turning 100 years old, and experienced so many wonderful things during her full life.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Herman, on August 27, 1995. She is survived by her daughter Susan (Harold) Kaskavitch, Rib Mountain; her granddaughter Racquel (Scott) Fout, Gurnee, IL; great granddaughter Nina Fout and great grandson Greyson Fout, Gurnee, IL; stepson Michael (Cindy) Preisig, Wausau; Kathy (Ken) Everson, Rhinelander, and their children and grandchildren; and sister-in-law Margaret Preisig, Wausau and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Saturday, January 12 at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau; Visitation from 12:00-1:00pm with a service at 1:00pm and a luncheon to follow at the funeral home. A private burial service will be held for the family on Monday.
Doris’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff at Wellington Place for their kind and compassionate care of Doris. They would also like to thank Reverend Steven Gjerde for his many visits to Doris during her time at Wellington, and to Aspirus Hospice Care for their care over the last several months.
Rest in eternal peace, Doris.
