Douglas C. Schuster will be remembered for his honesty, quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, and being a great conversationalist. Most importantly, he was a loving and devoted husband and father. When you met Doug, you met a friend. He had a varied professional career but his love for the outdoors and agriculture is what drove him to be a successful farmer who raised registered Jersey cattle.
He was born April 4, 1931 in Sturgeon Bay to the late Marvin and Myrtle (Grovogel) Schuster. While attending Sevastopol High School, he learned he had a talent for playing the trumpet. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He became a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Parris Island Band even playing in the Orange Bowl. Doug also became a champion wrestler for the Navy while stationed on the USS Midway. Upon his honorable discharge, Doug enrolled as an Ag major at UW Platteville, where he met his future wife Roberta Mullican. They were married in Freeport, Ill. on January 28, 1959. Doug was general manager of a Liberty Loan office in Rockford and then was executive vice president and general manager for the Rockford Investment Corp. After moving to Wausau, he worked 12 years as an insurance agent for Rural Insurance and then became a real estate broker for Woodrich Real Estate. In addition, he still found time to raise his registered Jersey cattle on their Town of Ringle farm. In the 1980's, Doug had the top Jersey herd for milk production in Wisconsin for four years in a row which was also ranked sixth in the nation.
At the age of 82, Doug passed away Friday, February 7, 2014 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta of Ringle, one daughter, Suzette (Rob) Bangart of Ringle, two sons, Douglas M.
