Douglas A. Walters passed away Monday June 14th with family by his side at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau, following a brain-injury accident.
Doug was born in the town of Wien, June 25th 1942 to Frank and Mildred (Borchardt) Walters. Doug graduated Edgar High School and barbering college. Doug started his barbering career at Eddies Barber shop in Wausau and thereafter opening his own shop in Rhinelander: Doug’s Barber Shop. Doug started his second career at Fleet Farm in the late 80’s and worked his way up to assistant manager at the Wausau Location.
Doug was united in marriage to Mary Baumann on September 1st 1962. He is survived by three children: Son, Brad and Jane Walters and their children Alexandria and Benjamin of Belleville, WI. Daughter, Lisa and Rob Swan and their son Kyle of Wausau. Son, Keith and Tammy Walters and their children Marcus and Cole of Winter Haven, FL.
Doug is further survived by his brothers; Frank and Judy Walters, Gary and Betty Walters, Ron Walters and (fiancé) Julie all of Wausau, and Greg Walters of Mayville, sister-in-law Delores Ringle of Missouri, and LouAnn Miles of Edgar and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his wife Mary – Jan 2010, his parents, his in-laws Louis and Erna Baumann, sister-in-law Carol Walters and brother-in-law Elmer Ringle and niece Cindy Niklinski.
Doug was an avid sports fan of the Badgers, Packers and Brewers, getting to as many games as he could, as well an avid supporter of his grandchildren’s’ sports. While in Rhinelander he was an honored member of the Jaycees, and the “anchor” for several bowling teams. He also loved Polka music, whether it was at home or at the store, Sunday mornings included polkas.
His greatest quality, however, was the commitment to his wife of 47 years. He would never admit the strain and toll of her struggles, and how it affected him. He made her a promise when they wed, which he carried out to the final day, when he lay down beside her and held her in his arms for her final breath. When it came to loving his best friend, nobody did it better, with more grace and love than he. Now he joins her for eternity – the way it is supposed to be.
The Family would like to give a sincere thank you to the nurses and staff at Aspirus Wausau Hospital and a special thanks to Dr. Beaumont for his efforts, patience in answering all of our questions and understanding.
