Dr. Allen Sanders Hoyum, 89, Rib Mountain, died on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, MN. He was born in Rib Mountain on January 21, 1920; son of the late Sanders and Alma Hoyum. He was united in marriage to Helen Keith on August 18, 1941 in Whitewater. She preceded him in death in 1998. Allen married Bernice Baesemann Kaatz on February 6, 1999, she survives. He is also survived by 4 children, Barbara (Eugene) Brotzman, Sauk City, Raymond (Miriam) Hoyum, Racine, Jean (the late Dean) Kaatz, Merrill, and Karen (Daniel) Ross, Racine; 6 grandchildren, Jennifer Hoyum, Rebecca (Terry) Lang, Sarah Kaatz, Lisa (Kazuo) Fukuda, Anna and Christine Ross; 2 step sons, Randy (Karen) Kaatz, The Dalles, OR, and Eldon Kaatz, Rib Mountain; 5 step grandchildren, Kevin (Mel) Kaatz, Carmen Kaatz, Daniel (Ruby) Brotzman, Randall (Karen) Brotzman, and David (Kim) Brotzman; 5 step great grandchildren and 2 step great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Allen was preceded in death by wife, Helen; sister, Dr. Jane Johnson and son-in-law, Dean Kaatz.
Allen was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville, MO. He practiced medicine in Elkton, SD for 5 years before relocating to Janesville, WI and continued his medical practice for 30 years.
After retirement, he and Helen resided in Deltona, FL for 14 years where he was a general contractor and realtor. They returned to Sauk City, WI in 1996. Allen and Helen enjoyed many summers at their vacation home in Minoqua. Allen was always “young of heart” and remained physically active his whole life. He played college basketball, enjoyed football, golfing, hunting and fishing. Allen was a member of the American Medical Association and the American Osteopathic Association. He accepted the gospel of Christ at a young age and remained faithful all his life.
Funeral services will be held at the Helke Funeral Home on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 2:30 PM. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Helke Funeral Home and Thursday from 1:30 P.M. until the time of services at the funeral home. Committal service and burial will be held at Milton Lawns Memorial Park Mausoleum, Janesville on Friday April 17, 2009 at 12:30 p.m.
