Edna Hess

Edna M. (Pyan) Hess, died on November 5, 2008, at Mount View Care Center, Wausau, Marathon County, Wisconsin.


She was born June 11, 1912, at home, in Marathon City, daughter of the late Edward Bluecher and Emilie Louise (Dahlke) Pyan. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Francis X. Hess, who died on June 18, 1982. On November 10, 1937, they were married in Outagamie County, Wisconsin.


She was member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Marathon City, where she was baptized and confirmed. Since 1946, she has been a member of St. Stephen Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was an active member and President of the Lydia Circle, and President of the Cradle Roll, for many years. During World War II, she worked for the American Red Cross. Mother was an excellent cook and baker. Everyone enjoyed her fresh baked breads, kuchens, and sweet rolls. Every Christmas, she would bake and make all kinds of cookies, candies, fruit cakes, and stollen, to share with her family and friends.


Survivors include her son, Dr. Donald B. Kiey, Sr. and his wife Charlotte; two daughters, Mary Ann Walsh, and Audrey Pope, and her husband Warren, all of Wausau; her beloved sister, Irene Hansel, of Appleton. Surviving grandchildren are: Debra (Mike) Ewing, of Centennial, CO, Donald B. (Karen) Kiey, Jr., of Woodruff, WI, Linda Kiey, of St. Paul, MN, Kay Pope and Warren Pope, Jr., of Wausau. And, she is survived by six great-grandchildren, Donald B., III, Jared, Tanner Kiey, Matthew, Lauren, and Noel Lange, and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.


Besides her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by one infant son, three sisters: Hattie Larson, Evelyn Kolasinki, Hilda Lodholz, and five brothers: Harry, Marvin, Alvin, Edward R., and Milo Pyan, and all their spouses, and her son-in-law, Edward T. Walsh. Also, her dear friends Bernice Pope, Margaret Gabrysek, and Lawrence "Larry" Pittsley, preceded her in death.


Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., on Saturday, November 8, 2008, at St. Stephen Evangelical Lutheran Church, 512 McClellan Street, Wausau. Rev. Gary Froseth will officiate and Pastor Bill Metter will be the eulogist. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., until the time of service. Helke Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. She will be laid to rest at Restlawn Memorial Park, beside her beloved husband.
