Evelyn Walters

August 23, 1926 — February 19, 2014

Evelyn Catherine Walters, 87, of Wausau, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at Applegate Terrace surrounded by her loving family, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services. She was born in Wausau to Edward and Catherine (Gleason) Etter on August 23, 1926. She later married Leo Walters on June 18, 1949 at the former St. James Catholic Church, Wausau.

Family was most meaningful to Evelyn. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and sharing meals with family and friends. She took care of everybody and ran the second generation family farm. She was the one who made sure things were taken care of and running smoothly and properly. In the evenings Evelyn finished her teaching degree during night school. Her first teaching position was in the D.C. Everest elementary school district, after all of her children were in school, all while still running the family farm. She had a passion for teaching children.

After her retirement, Evelyn stayed involved in the schools by tutoring students. She also enjoyed watching and feeding the birds.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Sharon (Harold) Welhouse, granddaughter, Nikki (Eric) Pangburn, and their children, Brittieny, Charles, Calea, and Peyton, grandson, Harold Welhouse (Libby Hady), and grandson, Lee Welhouse; Wayne (Joelyn) Walters, grandson, Jason Walters (Stephanie Eidnes), and their children, Shelby, Thomas, and Jayken, and grandson, Lance (Amanda) Walters, and their children, Bentley and Colten; Sandra (Greg) Ostrowski, grandson, Craig (Jessica) Ostrowski, and their children, Jadyn, Kylie, and Addison, grandson, Scott (Nikki) Ostrowski, and granddaughter, Kimberly Ostrowski; Janice Schairer (Tom Wyne), grandson, Cory (Karen) Schairer, and their children, Marcus, Simon, Boone, and Delilah, granddaughter, Kelly Clark, and her children, Kirsten and Kaitlyn, grandson, Mike (Tricia) Schairer, and their children, Sydney and Allie, and grandson, Rick Schairer (Krystal Resch); and Dale Walters, granddaughters, Connie, Corrin (Kyle Rosine), and grandson, Kyle; and close family friend, Ronald Juedes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; parents, Edward and Catherine; and brothers, Lloyd and Roy; and great-grandchild Elijah Pangburn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 24, 2014, at Church of the Resurrection, 621 Second St., Wausau, with Rev. James Schaefer officiating. Family and friends may call on Sunday, February 23, beginning at 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. A prayer service will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Visitation will continue beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, town of Texas.
