Fred D. Sorlie, 77, of Wausau, died Friday, May 15, 2009, of pulmonary fibrosis, at his home, with his wife by his side.
Fred was born April 12, 1932, in Mass, MI, the son of the late Carl and Ragna (Westrud) Sorlie. Growing up in Watersmeet, MI, he attended elementary and graduated from high school. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army, and served in the Korean War, stationed in Germany. He was united in marriage to Judith Rae Fraedrich on June 22, 1963.
He was the owner and operator of Land O’ Lakes Candy and distributed Old Dutch Potato Chips for almost 40 years, retiring in March 1996. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing up at the family cottage in Minoqua; and after retirement he enjoyed reading and traveling with his wife, especially to Las Vegas. Fred was an enthusiastic fan of the Brewers and Packers.
Fred is survived by his loving family, including: His wife of almost 46 years, Judith Sorlie, Wausau; 3 children, Wendy (Barry) Mohr, Eagle River, Lance (Tricia) Sorlie, Las Vegas, NV, and Knute Sorlie, Wausau; 7 grandchildren, Haley and Leah Mohr, Eagle River, Bryce and Chase Sorlie, Las Vegas, and John, Scott, and Thomas Sorlie, Wausau; and many other family members and friends.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Alexander “Ralph” Bell and Dorothy Haken.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 21, 2009, at the Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. The Reverend Phillip Schneider, of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, will officiate. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
