Freddie H. Bornowski, 89, of Wausau, died on Monday, February 7, 2011 at Colonial Manor. He was born in Fenwood, WI on March 8, 1921 to the late Emil and Elsie (Borchardt) Bornowski. He attended school in Wausau at Trinity Lutheran Grade School. Freddie started his active duty military service in the Marines in November 1942. He was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II including Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa, and Nagasaki. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained while in Saipan. Freddie married the former Isabel Polege on October 16, 1946 in the Town of Wien. He retired as a welder from DJ Murray Manufacturing in 1984.
Freddie was a member of the V.F.W. Burns Post #388 and participated in the Honor Guard, bingo, fair activities, and meals. He was also a member of the World War II Last Man's Club. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards with his family.
He is survived by sons, Freddie Jr. (April) of Green Bay, Ted (Lee Ann) of Wausau, and Donald (Yong) of South Korea; grandchildren, Nolan, Evan, Logan, Teri, Andrew (Amy), Samantha, JuLee, Joshua, and Sera; sisters, Dorothy Leffel, Marion (Hilbert) Werner, Marie (Jarold) Landwehr, all of Stratford, and Bernice (LeRoy) Grosskreutz of Wausau; sisters-in-law, Ester Buttke, Juanita (Harland) Meyer, and Theodora (Willis) Johnson; brother-in-law, Roger Nereng; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
Funeral services will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 703 Flieth St., with the Rev. Robert Edwards officiating. Military funeral honors will conclude the service by the VFW Burns Post #388 at the church. Visitation will be held at Helke Funeral Home on Friday, February 11, 2011 beginning at 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm and will continue at the church beginning at 10:00 am Saturday until the time of service. Entombment will take place in Restlawn Mausoleum on Monday, February 14, 2011 at 10:00 am.
