George Nowacki

February 23, 1925 — February 9, 2012

George T. Nowacki, 86, of Wittenberg passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at Our House Senior Living, Wausau under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Service.
He was born February 23, 1925 in Athens to the late Frank and Veronica (Gabriel) Nowacki. At the age of 18, George served his country during WWII with the U.S. Marines. He was a Purple Heart recipient fighting on the island of Iwo Jima and witnessed the flag being raised on his birthday. George was a current member of the Wittenberg American Legion Bloecher Johnson Post 502. On May 20, 1950, George married Mae Burek at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Wausau. George worked at JI Case in Schofield for 23 years and also owned and operated the North-Waye Motel in Wittenberg where they resided since 1958. George was known for his huge vegetable garden and enjoyed cooking, canning and sharing the harvest. Whether it was fishing, hunting or cutting wood, George loved being outdoors. George and Mae loved to Polka dance as well as traveling to Arizona, Alaska and Poland.
Survivors include two daughters, Georgia Mae Nowacki of Wausau, Gloria (Mitchel) King of Schofield, one son, Greg (Theresa) Nowacki of New Berlin, six grandchildren, Jeremy (Teri) King and great grandson Jacob, Adam (Tammy) King, Angela King, Katlyn (fiancé-Bradley Cherek) Nowacki, Kyra and Kimber Nowacki, and one sister, Veronica Ohm of Great Falls, Montana. George was preceded in death by Mae on December 21, 2007, eight sisters and five brothers.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at the Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. Rev. Reuben Carlson will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park with full military honors. Visitation will be Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home.
