Gordon Conrad, 90, of Wausau passed away on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
He was born January 21, 1922 in Wausau to the late Walter and Helen (Hemple) Conrad. After graduating from Wausau High School, Gordon served in the U.S. Army during WWII receiving the European Theatre ribbon. On September 12, 1950, Gordon married Therese Schmitt in Thorp. They raised their four children in Wausau with Gordon working as a machine operator at James River Corp. Gordon and Therese enjoyed taking the kids on family vacations especially Colorado and around Lake Superior. He also loved listening to Big Band music, watching military air shows, playing with his metal detectors and just relaxing around the campfire with family and friends. Gordon was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a charter member of the Wausau Gem and Mineral Club.
Survivors include his children, David (Theresa) Conrad of Wausau, Annmarie (Jeffery) Blume of Wausau, Susan (Joe) Mertens of Merrill and Joe (Connie) Conrad of Wausau, six grandchildren, Ross (Jill) Conrad, Eric, Ben and Dan Conrad, Alaina Blume and Shannon Blume Rice (Travis Rice) and two sisters, Alice Bavers of Wausau and Celia Triebel of Webster City, IA. Gordon was preceded in death by Therese on October 8, 2008 and his brother Victor.
The funeral mass will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 28, 2012 at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Oratory, 325 Grand Ave., Wausau. Rev. Canon Aaron Huberfeld will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park with full military honors provided by VFW Burns Post #388. Visitation will be Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the church with Rosary services beginning at 10:30 a.m. Helke Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
