Gordon Gauger, Sr

Gordon D. Gauger, Sr., 86, of Weston, passed away at Azura Memory Care, Rib Mountain, on Tuesday, June 14, 2016.

He was born to Arthur and Anna (Wedeward) Gauger on November 27, 1929, on the family farm in Auburndale. Gordon attended high school in Marshfield and later enlisted in the United States Navy. He was a Seaman serving aboard the ships U.S.S. Gainard and U.S.S. Ellison, including wartime service during the Korean War. In 2013, Gordon was able to take the Never Forgotten Honor Flight. He enjoyed the trip immensely as well as the time with his son and other veterans.

Gordon married Verna Covi on June 23, 1956, in Marshfield, and they enjoyed 48 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on October 25, 2004.

While Gordon and Verna lived in the Wausau area he worked for 10 years at J.I. Case as a sub-assembler, 11 years as a city bus driver for Metro Ride, and also worked for a time as a shuttle driver for Brickner Motors. Gordon was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ and served as an usher. He enjoyed being outside working on the lawn or shoveling snow. He also liked getting out for walks and the fresh air. Most of all Gordon was a sports fan rooting on the Packers, Brewers, and Badgers.

Survivors include his sons, Gordy, Jr. (Dee) and Guy (Ika Volm); grandchildren, Jenny (Greg) Lagoda, Derek (Amanda) Gauger, and Blake Gauger; and great-grandchildren, Liam and Haddie Gauger.

In addition to his wife, Gordon was preceded in death by four brothers.

A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 17, 2016, at Helke Funeral Home, 302 Spruce St., Wausau, with Pastor Christopher Ewan officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Wausau, with military honors provided by the American Legion Montgomery-Plant-Dudley Post 10.
