Grace "Betty" Hanke, 83, Wausau, died Sunday, May 9, 2010 at Wausau Manor Nursing Home under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
Betty Schoepke was born November 19, 1926 in Wausau to the late Henry L. and Nellie (Koss) Schoepke. She married Raymond Hanke on June 23, 1951 in Wausau and the couple welcomed the births of their sons, Michael and Jeffrey. Betty worked first for Marathon Battery and then American Can in their factories prior to having her sons at which point she stayed home to raise them. Raymond and Betty loved to dance together and listen to polka music. The happy couple celebrated 35 wonderful years together prior to Raymond's death on December 5, 1986.
Betty was strong in her faith throughout her life and until the last several years she was an active member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish. Her favorite pastime was watching classic movies and recounting her knowledge about the stars. Betty also enjoyed staying current with Hollywood's stars by reading various magazines. Betty enjoyed going to local church picnics with her family, visiting with her sister Bunny and long distance phone visits with her niece Cheryl Cradit. In her later years, Betty's favorite activity was getting her hair done and talking to the girls at the salon.
Betty is survived by her loving sons, Michael L. Hanke and Jeffrey L. (Cindi) Hanke both of Wausau; grandchildren, Andrea Hanke and Rebecca Mondroski; and great-granddaughter, Kiana Felix; sisters, Bernice (Milton) Towle and Arlene (Frederick) Zender; sister-in-law, Louise Hanke; friends; Marlene Minton and Helen Graveen, and many extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Debra Ann, and brother, Harold Schoepke.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday May 13, 2010 at Holy Name of Jesus Parish. Father Gerald Pehler OFM cap will be officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Helke Funeral Home,Wausau and Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
