Harry Meinel, 85, of Mercer passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at St. Joseph Hospital, Marshfield.
He was born May 30, 1930 in Milwaukee to the late Ernst and Agathe (Zaretzke) Meinel. After graduating from Minocqua High School, Harry served his country with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Upon his Honorable Discharge, Harry attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee receiving his degrees in Zoology and Botany and his Masters Degree in Botany. He married Lois (Kleinschmidt) Meinel and had five children but they later divorced.
When Harry retired as an inspector with Dodge County, he moved to his rural home in Mercer where he could enjoy his hobbies and his life long passion for the outdoors. His interests were cultivated early on by his father and his uncle Walter but over the years he enjoyed some unique hobbies such as maintaining his trout ponds and banding hawks along Lake Michigan. More recently, Harry especially enjoyed planting his wildflowers and feeding his birds with his birdfeeders.
Survivors include his children, Jim (Julie) Meinel of Germantown, Steve (Jodene) Meinel of Weston, Laura Meinel of Oconomowoc, Paul (Sheryl Bateman) Meinel of Ridgefield, Washington, Mary Meinel of Weston, ten grandchildren, Evan, Morgan, Tyler, Chad, Keaton, Kyle, Katie, Kayla, Chris, Andrew, and one sister, Jean (Neil) Beisenstein of Tumbling Shoals, AR. Harry was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Lacey.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30th at the Manitowish Waters Community Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Pine Lawn Cemetery, Manitowish Waters.
