Hazel Block, 92, Wausau, went to be with her Lord Thursday, July 1, 2010 at the Rennes Health and Rehabilitation Center, Weston under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice.
Hazel Ida Salzsieder was born August 9, 1917 at the family home in the Town of Easton to the late Eric and Lilly (Weber) Salzsieder. Hazel attended the St. John’s Lutheran School through the 8th grade at which time she began working. One of her first jobs was working as a cook and housekeeper at her uncle’s resort up north. It was here that she learned how to cook and bake with wonderful skill. Hazel married Norman Block on February 13, 1937 at St. John Lutheran Church, Town of Easton. They farmed together until retirement in the 1970’s. The couple welcomed two children into their family, Karl and Rosalynn. Hazel and Norman celebrated 53 loving years together before his death, June 13, 1990.
Hazel was a woman dedicated to her faith and to her church. She was baptized, confirmed and united in marriage at St. John Lutheran Church. She was very active in the Ladies Aid at church, often helping with church dinners. Hazel loved to work in her garden, raising vegetables and flowers. Hobbies included card playing (especially cribbage), crocheting, fishing, traveling and spending time with family and friends. Outside of the home, she was a member of the Good Neighbors Homemakers Club, a 4-H leader, volunteered with the Commission on Aging, worked at the Wisconsin Valley Fair, and alongside Norman as a night bailiff with the Marathon County Jail. Throughout her life, Hazel had a young spirit and a wonderful sense of humor. She touched many people during her life, and her memory will live on in their hearts.
Hazel is survived by her children, Karl (Kay) Block and Rosalynn Roloff; grandchildren, Randy (Deb) Block, Diana Block, Tim (Tami) Block, Craig (Sharon) Roloff and Jill (Jeff) Reiche; great-grandchildren, Logan and Matthew Block, Brycen and Kaeden Witt (Block), Abbigail and Carter Block, Dana Roloff and Will and Rebecca Reiche; sister, Beatrice Golz; brother-in-law, Charles (Sally) Lewitzke, and many extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Lloyd Roloff; brothers, Dennis and Myron Salzseider, and her sister, Delores Lewitzke.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at St. John Lutheran Church, Town of Easton. Reverend Timothy Coppersmith will be officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at the church and resume on Wednesday at 10 AM, lasting until the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
