Herman Westerdyk, 83, of Wausau, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, under the care of Ministry Hospice at Colonial Manor.
He was born in The Netherlands on February 23, 1933, to Hendrick and Berhadina (Stryker) Westerdyk. Herman married Tini Brinksma on March 3, 1955 in The Netherlands. A few years later, in 1957, they made the journey to the United States, and to Wisconsin. With a sponsor in Holland, Michigan and a job available for him at a dairy farm in the Wausau area, they were able to start their lives in the United States. Herman served in the Army National Guard and was activated during the Berlin Crisis. He became a U.S. citizen on December 3, 1962. Herman owned Dutchmaster Floor and Wall Service, installing carpet, tile, laminate flooring, and completed many other projects. Tini helped run the business and took care of the bookkeeping. Together they ran a successful business for over 30 years.
Herman enjoyed deer hunting, fishing Lake Superior with his boat "The Wooden Shoe," and traveling and taking cruises with Tini. He also enjoyed the company of his dogs, Charcoal 1, Malty, and Charcoal 2. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ and Wausau Elks Lodge #248.
