Hilma was born in the town of Berlin, September 6, 1917, the daughter of the late August and Lydia (Ollhoff) Plautz. On February 27, 1937, she was united in marriage to Karl F. Manthei. Together they shared 51 years of marriage before his death in 1988. Then on January 10, 1991, she was united in marriage to Louis Sawyer, who predeceased her in December 2009. She worked at Marathon Rubber Products Company for 28 years, retiring in 1979.
She greatly enjoyed being involved at Grace United Church of Christ, where she had been a member since 1945. She was active in the Women’s Guild, Willing Workers, Valley Auxiliary, and taught Sunday school, through the church; and was also a member of Wausau Christian Women and the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem. Her willingness to be involved and help others, through in her volunteer work with the Marathon County Health Care Center, allowed her to put her sewing and quilting talents to use making and mending anything given to her. Despite her busy schedule, she made it a priority to gather with family and friends for card playing, dancing, and midnight snacks.
