Horace Freitag

April 11, 1925 — July 9, 2013

Horace "Fry" Emil Viktor Freitag was born 11 April 1925, in Berlin, Germany to Erich and Erna (Miche) Freitag. They immigrated to the United States in 1927, settling in New Jersey.

In 1943, Fry, his neighbors, and friends chose to serve in the U.S. Army of their adopted country. For Fry this commitment lasted until July 1975 when he retired as an Army Colonel.

During those 32 years, he served ten years each in Germany, the Far East, and the U.S. The Far East included fighting in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, earning two Silver Stars for bravery during the Korean conflict.

In 1962, while assigned to the Pentagon, he met and married Avis Hinz, and to this union three children were born: Christine Kay and twins, Eric Victor and Kurt Ernest.

On retirement in 1975, the family moved to Granite Falls, Minnesota, his wife's hometown. His brother-in-law, Paul Hinz, had a cattle operation and he spent his hours assisting in any manner possible. Fry joined Kiwanis in 1976 and served as the club secretary for 17 years. He worked to increase participation in the YMC 4-H horse club and the Monte Mounties Saddle Club as he enjoyed working with the kids and horses. He also worked as a volunteer at the Minnesota State Park.

The marriage dissolved in 1997 and Fry moved to Wausau, Wisconsin, to be near his daughter and her family. He continued with Kiwanis and was awarded the Hixson Award, and was active in the U.S. Power Squadron for safe boating.

He is survived by his former wife, Avis Freitag; daughter, Christine (Wayne) Kastens of Kronenwetter, WI; sons, Eric (Colleen) Freitag of Hastings, MN, and Kurt Freitag of Albert Lea, MN; granddaughters, Brittney, Jessica, and Stephanie Kastens, and Ashlyn and Lindsey Freitag; and special buddy, Don (Gloria) Richardt.

He wishes to be remembered as a professional infantry officer who served his adopted country with dedication and pride.

A memorial visitation will be on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Helke Funeral Home, 302 Spruce St., Wausau, beginning at 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. A gathering will also be held at Bootlegger's Supper Club on Thursday, August 22, 2013, in Granite Falls, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

The family would like to thank the staffs at DaVita Wausau Dialysis, TLC Care, and Ministry Home Care Hospice, for the great care provided to Fry.
