Irene Schlueter

Irene Schlueter died on September 17, 2013. Her active life spanned 101 years. She spent all of her life in the Wausau area except for brief work related residencies in Milwaukee and New York City.

She was an education specialist at Employers Mutual/Wausau Insurance for 43 years, retiring in 1974. For the next 32 years she devoted much of her time to volunteer service. Often acting as an officer or committee chairperson, she belonged to the following organizations: Altrusa Club; Wausau Hospital Volunteers; Marathon County Historical Society; SCORE; Wausau Women's Club; Embroiderers Guild of America; Wausau Area Taxpayers League; and Wausau Area Chamber of Commerce. She was an ardent, active member of the Republican Party and a faithful longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Irene traveled extensively throughout the world. Even when she was sitting down she was a doer. She shared highlights of many of her trips with local groups through interesting slide shows. She created beautiful embroidery pieces and for fifty years enjoyed monthly sessions with her Bridge Club. The many people who knew Irene respected the energy and commitment she brought to everything she did.

During the final years of her life she received excellent care at Our House Assisted Living. Her time there was highlighted by a very special 100th birthday party. In the last weeks of her life she also received the comfort offered by caring Hospice workers.

Survivors include one niece, one great-niece, five great-great-nieces, one great-nephew, and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 501 Stewart Ave., Wausau, with Rev. Joel Brandt officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Wausau, on Monday, September 23, 2013, at 9:30 a.m.
