Jacqueline Freitag

Jacqueline J. Freitag, 79, of Schofield, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. She was born in Oconto Falls, WI, on July 19, 1935 to Gaston and Eleanor (Halsted) Garnier.

She was a 1953 graduate of Oconto Falls High School. After high school she attended the Marinette Normal Teaching School and later received her Bachelor of Science from UW – Oshkosh. During her time in Marinette she met her future husband, Kenneth. On a May morning over fifty years ago he picked her up in his 1958 Chevy and they drove off to elope. This is one of the family's favorite stories, which is shared often. Most recently Jacqueline was a third-grade teacher at Weston Elementary for over thirty years.

In addition to teaching in the public schools, Jacqueline taught bible school while in Oconto Falls and also participated in bible studies at Wesley United Methodist, Wausau, where she was an active member. She was a lover of large dogs and enjoyed many in her life, including several English Mastiff's and two Great Danes. She also was an avid supporter of animal shelters and humanitarian efforts. Jacqueline enjoyed pontoon boat rides in the summer, traveling, time at the cottage up north, celebrating the holidays, local arts and theater, and walks amongst the flowers during the spring. During winter months she looked forward to cheering on her favorite football team, the Green Bay Packers.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth; children, Terry of Schofield, Brian of New Albany, Indiana, and Andrea of Madison; mother, Eleanor Garnier of Weston; and many cousins in Wisconsin and France.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gaston; and two aunts.

A memorial service will be at 12 noon on Friday, May 1, 2015, at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spruce, Wisconsin.
