Jake was born March 10th 1925, in the town of Cassel, to the late John E. and Tekla (Bembenek) Jakubowski. He was a lifelong resident of Wausau and shortly before graduating high school, he was drafted into the military. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and proudly served his country during World War II. On August 24th 1946, he was united in marriage to Joyce Eggebrecht. The couple built the home they live in to this day, where they raised their 5 children.
He worked at Steffke Freight and in 1963, he began his career at Drott, retiring in 1983. Jake and Joyce were avid bowlers. They were charter members of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where he participated as an usher.
Most of all, Jake enjoyed spending time up north, at the family home on Bass Lake. Many hours were spent fishing with Joyce, boating on the pontoon while wearing his captain's hat, and making many memories that will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. Jake will be remembered for his warm, welcoming smile and for his strong will to live and enjoy life. He cared deeply for his family and was always concerned about how they were doing.
On March 19th 2012, John D. "Jake" Jakubowski died at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, with family by his side. He was 87 years old.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Joyce; five children, Judith (David) Rheinschmidt, Wausau, Daniel (Ruth) Jakubowski, Anne Ohrmundt, Minocqua, Cynthia Hoenisch, Eau Claire, and Jon (Renee) Jakubowski, Chippewa Falls; eight grandchildren, Wendy (Joel) Ohrmundt, Aron Cherek, Ryan (Kim) Jakubowski, Heather (Mike) Gallenberg, Brec (fiancée Rachel Loos) Ohrmundt, Andrew (Robin) Hoenisch, Beth (Morten) Pedersen, and Adam Jakubowski; four great-grandchildren, Sydney, Jack, Calvin, and Elise; special friend, Doyle Quiggle; and other family and friends.
A service celebrating Jake's life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 24th, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Wausau. The Reverend Bruce Lamont will officiate. Entombment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park, with full military honors. Family will receive guests on Saturday, at the church, beginning at 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
