Joseph Waldvogel

August 31, 1916 — November 12, 2009

Joseph Waldvogel was a hardworking man who took great pride in taking care of his family. He and his wife Sophie were blessed with seven children who they truly loved. Joe enjoyed running their town of Maine dairy farm, Jo-Wal Farms with his family. Later in life, he took up the hobby of Ginseng farming and had a secret way of successfully raising his crop. Joe was also co-owner of Kowalski Dairy and Supreme Dairy. Membership in the National Holstein Association, Ginseng Association, and the Wausau Elk’s Club kept Joe busy too.


At the age of 93, Joe passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at North Central Health Care.


He was born August 31, 1916 in the town of Norwood to the late Charles and Matilda (Bissonette) Waldvogel. On September 4, 1937, Joe married Sophie Kowalski at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Phlox.


Joe’s Catholic upbringing was important to him. He was a founding member of the Church of St. Anne and St. Matthew Catholic Church and was active in the Serra Club.


Survivors include his children, George (Carla) of Wausau, Charles of Waukesha, William (Kathy) of Birchwood, Linda (Jonathan) Gould of Burlington, James (Mary) of Mendota Heights, MN, 19 grandchildren, Paul (Dawn), George Jr. (Darcy), Diana (Thomas) Witter, Joseph, Jeffrey (Katherine), Lisa (Curtis) Day, Perry (Angie), Jason (Michelle), Julia (Kevin) Grove, Michael (Melissa), Brian, Craig (Kate), Kelly and Sara Gould, Sophie, Fritz, Nicholas, Joseph, Greta, 22 great grandchildren, Alyssa, Atina, Austin, Amanda, Adam, Jessica, Jennifer, Stephanie, Luke, Jon, Alex, Stefan, Chelsea, Travis, Iris, Miles, Dylan, Tyler, Elizabeth, Meagan, Kaleigh, Hanah (Will) Gau, and one great great grandson, Zayden, one sister, Bernice Schleinz of Aniwa, and a brother-in-law, Chuck Dressler.


Joe was preceded in death by Sophie on November 17, 1972, a daughter, Mary Jane, a son, Joseph Jr., a grandson, Matthew, daughter-in-law, Carol, his long time companion, Nina Oelke, four sisters, Mary Rank, Augusta Immekus, Anna Robinson, Dolores Dressler, and four brothers, Anton, Henry, Peter, and Clement.


The funeral mass will be 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at the Church of St. Anne, Wausau. Father Steve Brice will officiate. Burial will be in St. Michael Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Helke Funeral Home with a parish rosary service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
