Josephine "Josie" Mildred Breit, 74, Wausau, was called to her eternal home with Jesus on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, in the Palliative Care Unit at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
On January 30, 1938, Josie was born to the late Mary (Niziolek) and Joseph Salzman. She was one of 13 children. She married Arnold Breit, on June 6, 1956, in Wisconsin Rapids. Together, in their almost 56 years of marriage, they shared the many joys of raising their three children. Her strong faith in Jesus was an important value that she brought to her family.
Josie was a fun, spirited lady that enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She liked to go on camping trips with her husband, children, and eventually her grandchildren. She especially liked to camp in Decorah, IA. Josie enjoyed doing puzzles, crosswords, reading books; but she will be most remembered for her knitting and plastic canvas crosses. Her children would always look forward to Christmas time, so they could get their new set of knitted dish cloths that she made for them.
She was very active in her church community as well. She taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School over the years. She has also held offices in the Mary Martha Guild, at Rib Mt. Lutheran Church, and in Thrivent at St. Peters Lutheran Church. She and her husband also enjoyed volunteering at Wisconsin Valley Lutheran High School. She was most recently a member at Trinity Lutheran Church, Wausau.
She will be sadly missed by her husband, Arnold; one son, Allen Breit, Hortonville, WI; two daughters, Lenore Breit, Wausau, and Sherri (Ken) Messerschmidt, Wausau; six sisters, Rose (Norbert) Henrichs, Minocqua, Louise Williams, Wausau, Lucille (Richard) Bousley, Townsend, WI, Pearl Wallner, Wausau, Mary Kay (Jim) Smith, Wausau, and Esther Salzman, Wausau; three brothers, Lawrence (Mary Jean) Salzman, Medford, Leonard (Nancy) Salzman, Wausau, and James (Sandy) Salzman, Wausau; two grandchildren, Adam (fiancee, Sara Wilcox) Breit, and Amy Breit; two step grandchildren, Jesse and Jeremy (Megan) Messerschmidt; and one step great-grandchild, Tristian Messerschmidt.
She was further preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin, and Arnold; one infant sister, Delores; and one step great-grandchild, Jeremiah Messerschmidt.
A funeral service will be held 11:00a.m. Friday, March 30, 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Wausau. Pastor Joel Brandt will officiate. A visitation will be held Thursday, March 29, 2012, from 4-8p.m. at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau, and again from 9:30a.m. on Friday morning until the time of service, at the church.
The family ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Wisconsin Valley Lutheran High School, 601 Maple Ridge Rd, Mosinee, WI 54455
