Laura Post was called home in the early morning hours of December 18 2010, at the generous age of 100. She was born August 17, 1910 to Charles and Elizabeth Wolfe in the town of Easton, the eldest of five children. She married Gustave Post on June 6, 1931 at Zion Church in the town of Easton. After an initial residence in Ringle, where Gust ran a service station, Laura and Gust moved to an eighty-acre dairy farm just a stone's throw from the Eau Claire Dells. With frugality and hard work they raised a family of six children in these bucolic environs.
Lauraa(TM)s life was homespun. She learned domestic skills as a daughter, honed them as a wife, and practiced them as a mother. Laura did not engage a profession, but a lifestyle. The demands of beginning a family home in the Depression years taught her the value of darning socks rather than replacing them. As for many of the era, domestic crafts and arts made a home.
As skilled with a rolling pin as with a needle, her baking was extraordinary in its very modesty. Cakes and cookies, bars and breads, cinnamon rolls and kuchen; all simply delicious. Her hand-rolled pie crusts, apple-filled most memorably, were as light and fragile as January snowflakes. Such desserts topped the savory meat and potatoes menu of an earthy German table.
In 1956 Gust completed construction of a house at the fringe of Wausaua(TM)s city limits. Coinciding with the birth of a seventh child, the couple, their newborn, and three remaining daughters in or near their teens, quickly adapted to the luxury of modern appliances and indoor plumbing.
Laura was a member of the Altar Guild at both Zion Lutheran Church in Wausau and, later, at Christ Lutheran Church, the latter in which Gust and Laura devoted both time and tithes from its inception. Their first services at Townline Road were held in a simple shed, before completion of the church.
Laura kept her hand in needlework well into her nineties, especially the art of embroidery. Decorative linens and colorful wall hangings were lovingly stitched for children and grandchildren. Her attention to detail relied on deft fingers and, most importantly, her keen eyesight, still acute in her advanced years.
After a long and peaceful life, Lauraa(TM)s dying was brief and equally peaceful. Laura was preceded in death by her husband Gustave and a daughter, Carol Hodges, as well as three siblings; Irene Kell (Norman), Herbert Wolfe and Russell Wolfe.
Survivors include six children: Gerald (Carolyn) of Rochester, MI; Janice Gaugush (Charles), Wausau; Donald (Jo), Rib Falls; Sharon Albrecht (Gerry) of rural Wausau; Phyllis Ehlers (Bruce) of Hilton Head, NC and Allen of Wausau. She is also survived by her youngest brother Ray Wolfe (Joan) of Neillsville. In addition, Laura was blessed with over fifty grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be officiated by Pastor David Wetmore at Christ Lutheran Church, 1300 Townline Road in Wausau, on Monday December 27. Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m. with services at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow. The motorcade will depart Christ Lutheran by 1:30 p.m. for the internment at Restlawn Memorial Park, north Sixth Street at Evergreen Road.
Gifts of condolence can be made to the Christ Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
A special thanks to the many professional and personable staff at Wausau Manor who provided for Lauraa(TM)s care from late July 2008 until her death.
