LaVerne E. Hollman, 83, Wausau, passed away on Sunday, September 12, 2010 with her family by her side. She was born March 6, 1927, daughter of the late Otto and Elsie (Fell) Grebe, in Wausau.
She spent much time in prayer and was gifted with an exceptional memory for Scripture having memorized hundreds of verses including several chapters of the Bible. Encouraging others, by visiting those in nursing homes to bring a treat, sing “Happy Birthday”, and share songs, hymns and stories about the Lord, was one of her joys in life. Until a recent diagnosis of cancer slowed her down, she enjoyed her daily walks at the mall, loved shopping for a bargain at her favorite shops, and taking pictures of every occasion to share with others. Her mind stayed sharp playing several favorite games, especially Rummy Cube, with family and friends. In her younger days she attended Cassidy School (town of Maine) and was a talented softball pitcher with the Wausau team. Laverne blessed her family with her attitude of hospitality, and gift of organization-always planning ahead and prepared well in advance for every occasion.
A world traveler, LaVerne enjoyed Israel, Egypt, China, Russia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the Scandinavian countries, and Venezuela. There were many trips around the U.S. and winters in Florida.
LaVerne had been employed in Wausau at the Pied Piper Shoe Factory in younger years and retired from Wausau Papers in 1989.
She will be greatly missed by her son; Russell (JoAnn) Hollman of Manawa, grandchildren, Seth (TaraLea) Hollman of Waupaca, Shari (Matthew) Palmeri of New London, and Shawn (Matthew) Schliewe of Sheboygan. She is also survived by her brother, Eugene (Lorraine) Grebe, her sisters, Shirley (Fred) Niemeyer and Faye (Ronald) Peters, all of Wausau, sister-in-law, Rachel Grebe of Whittier, CA, and many special nieces, nephews, precious cousins and friends. She was a very proud great grandmother to Justin, Ellia, Gabriel, Madeline, Sophia, Addison, Spencer, Mollie, and Arianna.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Elroy Grebe, sister, Violet (Glen) Chancellor, and an infant brother, Melvin.
Funeral services for LaVerne will be held Thursday, September 16, 2010, 11:00 a.m. at the Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. Brian Doran and John Kulp will officiate.
