Layton Leitermann

August 22, 1937 — January 8, 2014

Layton Ervin Leitermann was born August 22nd 1937, the son of the late Edwin and Lillian (Fischer) Leitermann, in Marathon, Wisconsin. The family lived in Milwaukee during Layton's early years before moving back to the Wausau area where he attended Wausau Senior High and graduated in 1955. After military service, he started his professional life working at Steffke Freight, followed by a 27-year career at Sears Roebuck and Co. in Wausau, where he first retired in 1985. Starting a second career, he worked as a registered broker for LaSalle St. Securities in Rhinelander, Wisconsin for 12-years before his final retirement in 1999.

On December 1st 1956, he was united in marriage to Barbara Wolfe, at Saint Anne Parish, Wausau. The couple and their three children lived in Wausau until 1982, when Layton and Barbara moved to their lake home on Squash Lake in Rhinelander, Wisconsin.

An enthusiastic hunter and fisherman, Layton enjoyed all aspects of the sportsman life style, especially the camaraderie and lifelong friendships developed in the fishing boat and the hunting shack. Even in the winter months, Layton could be found outside, enjoying the pleasures of the forest, often with chainsaw in hand. In the summer, his sporting passion turned to golf. As a longtime member of the Inshalla Country Club in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, Layton took great pleasure spending time with his golf buddies regardless of the days score or the 'snake' count. He celebrated two Holes-In-One's, the second one scored in July of 2013. Layton and Barb spent time in Golf Shores, AL, during the winter, where the couple walked the beach, played golf, horseshoes and enjoyed spending time with friends in the sun.

Layton will be most remembered for all the special days with his family and friends on the beautiful shores of Squash Lake. Uncountable memories of good and happy days will be his lasting legacy.

On January 8th 2014, Layton E. Leitermann passed away peacefully, surrounded by his beloved family, under the care of Ministry Home Care and Hospice, at home.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Barbara; three children, Mark (Susan Schymanski) Leitermann, Linda (Robert) Wendorf, and Charles (Patty) Leitermann; seven grandchildren, Daniel Leitermann, Robyn (Ryan) Renderman, Ryan (Holly) Wendorf, Tyler Wendorf, Evan Leitermann, Chad Leitermann, and Brad Leitermann; two great-grandchildren, Riah and Reid Renderman; brother, Wayne (Chris) Leitermann; two brothers-in-law, David (Sandra) Wolfe and Thomas (Paula) Wolfe; sister-in-law, Karin (Robert) Thomas; many nieces and nephews; and numerous other family members and friends. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Charles.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 14th, at Saint Anne Parish, Wausau; with Reverend Alan Burkhardt and Reverend John C. Anderson, Saint Mary's Church, Tomahawk, officiating. Interment will follow in Saint Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Marathon. Family will receive guests on Tuesday, at church, from 9 a.m. until the service.

A special thank you from Layton's family for the outstanding care provided by Dr. Rezazadeh, his nurse, Renee, and all the staff at the Aspirus Regional Cancer Center; along with the nurses and caregivers from Ministry Home Care and Hospice, Rhinelander.
