Leonard Imhoff, 88, of Wausau passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at Mt. View Care Center under the care of Aspirus Hospice and Comfort Care Services.
He was born at home in the town of Cassel on April 3, 1928 to the late John and Mary (Handrick) Imhoff. At the age of 17, Leonard joined the Merchant Marines serving on Great Lakes. A year later, he joined the Navy during WWII and was stationed at Guam serving in SeaBees. After returning from service, Leonard married Loretta Ostrowski on June 29, 1949 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Wausau. He was a machinist at Marmet Corporation and helped on special projects and troubleshooting during his 39 years with the company. He served as Union President for several years at Marmet for Machinist Local 1438.
Leonard was a very kind, thoughtful man who truly loved his family. He treasured the fun times they spent together on their many camping trips as well as visiting and playing cards with relatives on Sundays. Leonard had many talents from building his own home, carpentry and teaching himself how to play the Accordion. He loved gardening, fishing and deer hunting every November. After his retirement, he and Loretta enjoyed traveling across the United States in their motorhome.
Survivors include his four children, Cheryl (Hugh) Gross of Gleason, Gayle (Scott) Maluegge of Merrill, Gregory Imhoff of Wausau, Gary (Erica) Imhoff of Wausau, 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter, sister, Alvina Jacobi of Wausau, brother-in-law, Clair (Jeanette) Ostrowski of Wausau and sisters-in-law, Alice Imhoff of Wausau and Nona Ostrowski of Mosinee.
Leonard was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta, two daughters, Linda Imhoff and Eileen Rupe, great granddaughter, Jessica, brother, Bill Imhoff and three sisters, Catherine Buchberger, Irene DeLisle and Adeline Gehrke.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 13, 2017 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 1104 S. 9th Ave., Wausau. Father Dan Thelen will officiate. Full military rites will be conducted at church by the American Legion Montgomery Plant Dudley Post #10 in which Leonard was a 32 year member. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Friends may call Sunday at the Helke Funeral Home, 302 Spruce St., Wausau from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. concluding with a 5:00 p.m. prayer service.
