Luella “Lu” E. Maaser, 94, died Friday, January 16, 2009 at First Community Village in Upper Arlington, Ohio.
Lu was born on September 20, 1914 in Merrill to the late Paul and Ella Hahn. Lu graduated from Merrill High School and then completed a clerical school degree. She then moved to Wausau and worked as a secretary for some years at Employers’ Mutual Insurance. Lu married Earl Maaser on May 11, 1940 and they were together until his death in 1986. Earl owned the Service Glass and Tile Co. on North Third Ave. for many years. Lu’s mother lived with the family for many years, and then with Lu until her death in 1991.
Lu is survived by one son, Bruce and wife, Leslie who live in Columbus, Ohio with granddaughter Karenna. Lu moved from Wausau to Columbus in 2002 to be with her family, and has lived in a long term care facility in Columbus for the past 4 years. Lu was preceded in death by her only brother, Vernon.
Lu bowled for many years in a women’s league and also in a couple’s league. She sewed professionally with her mother, enjoyed arts and crafts, and entering contests. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church for many years, and did many service activities for the church. Lu’s granddaughter described her Grammy Lu as “a loving and caring grandmother who liked to play games and go to parks with us”. Lu will be remembered with deep love, affection and gratitude by her family and everyone who knew her.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Friday, January 23, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church, Wausau. Pastor Joel Schmalz will be officiating. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM and last until 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 22 at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau, and again on Friday one hour prior to the funeral service at Zion Lutheran Church.
