Lyle Harold Hopperdietzel, 66, died Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at St. Clare's Hospital, Weston.

Lyle was born July 23, 1944 in Wausau to the late Harold and Cyrilla (Peters) Hopperdietzel. He graduated from Athens High School before joining the US Army and serving his country in Vietnam. Upon returning home, Lyle married his longtime sweetheart, Geraldine Paul, at First English Lutheran Church, Wausau on August 30, 1969. He worked as an equipment operator for the City of Wausau for 36 years prior to retiring.

Lyle was a good man and who always had time for people. He was an avid hunter and fisherman enjoying the outdoors as much as he could. Lyle loved to spend time up north at the trailer as often as he could. In his free time, he also enjoyed playing sheepshead.

Lyle is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Geraldine; sons, David and John (Beth) Hopperdietzel all of Wausau; brother, Jerome Hopperdietzel of Athens; brother-in-law, Lee Raasch of Merrill; sister-in-law, Nancy Hopperdietzel of Athens; and many extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his brother, Clifford Hopperdietzel and sister, Marilyn Raasch.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. Father Robert Thorn will be officiating. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM on Friday, July 8 at Helke Funeral Home, lasting until 8:00 PM and resuming on Saturday at 9:00 AM until the time of services. Entombment will follow the funeral at Restlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. VFW Burns Post #388 will be performing military honors.
