Marion Raatz

Marion Marie Raatz, 84, of Wausau, passed away on Monday, September 29, 2014, at Evergreen Assisted Living, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services. She was born to Henry and Minnie (Tesch) Schmidt on May 19, 1930, in Wausau. She married Lawrence Raatz on November 4, 1950, in Wausau.

Marion worked for 38 years at Wausau Hospital as a cook and later as a baker. She retired from the hospital at the same time Lawrence retired from his job so they could spend time together. They began to travel and had their favorite spots in Florida and Las Vegas, and especially enjoyed their first cruise together. She enjoyed polkas, gardening, canning, cooking, and knitting. Her family all had pairs of knitted mittens and loved her potato salad and spaghetti sauce. Marion was also a good teacher, showing how to milk cows, make butter, and other skills to get by. She watched as many Brewers games as she could and kept up on the team. Most of all Marion loved being around family and friends.

Survivors include her children, Jeffrey (Susan), Danny (Pat), and Sharon (Raymond C.) Shirmer; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; brother and sisters, Doris Wauchope, Bernice (Bruce) Beyreis, David (Mary Ann) Schmidt, and Lois (Jerome) Guillame; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; and parents, Henry and Minnie.

A funeral service will be at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, 2014, at Helke Funeral Home, 302 Spruce St., Wausau, with Rev. Tim Vanden Langenberg officiating. Family and friends may call beginning at 4:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, town of Texas.
