Melvin was born December 10, 1924, the son of the late Albert and Selma (Bartel) Kempf, in the town of Cassel. He grew up the youngest of 11 children on the family farm near Marathon and with great pride, continued his work there for many years after his parents’ deaths. On December 4, 1948, he was united in marriage to Irene Vilter in Iron Mountain, MI.
He enjoyed being outside and spent much time tending to his vegetable garden. When he could find the time, he hunted and fished. Later in life, Melvin followed his grandchildren’s achievements in high school sports.
