Michael Melang, 54, Wausau, died Sunday, April 27, 2008 under the care of Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
Michael was born on March 2, 1954 in Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana to Robert and Virginia (Kolbeck) Melang. In 1972, he graduated from Wausau West High School and went on to attend North Central Technical College for a couple of years. While working for Connor Forest Industries, Michael met Debra Ganterer and the two were married on August 24, 1985 at St. Anne's Catholic Church, Wausau. Michael and Debra continued to work together at Kolbe & Kolbe for the past twenty years. The couple celebrated twenty-two loving years together prior to Michael's passing.
Michael lived a good life, being generous with his time to many charities and always being ready to help family or a friend in need. He was a very likeable man, and a friend to all he met. Michael was very intelligent, making short work of any puzzle he found, and he often enjoyed tinkering with things to see how they worked. Michael was a very good cook, and enjoyed good food. In his free time, he liked to go fishing, play poker on the internet and set off fireworks. At home, Michael was a very sensitive man, often liking nothing more than to sit and watch a comedy with Debra. Every year the happy couple celebrated their anniversary with a trip to Minneapolis and a weekend getaway together.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Debra; parents, Robert and Virginia Melang; two sisters, Kathy (Scott) Pieper and Deborah Melang; mother and father-in-law, Isabelle and Donald Ganterer; brother-in-law, Jim (Gloria Johnson) Ganterer; sister-in-law, Joan (Jeff) King; nieces and nephews, Tina, Todd, Rachel, and Robbie; five great-nephews and one great-niece, Tanner, Devin, Tony, Eli, Noah, and Emma; and many more extended family and friends. Michael is preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Geraldine Warnick.
The Funeral Mass will be 11:00 AM Friday, May 2, 2008 at St. Anne's Catholic Church, Wausau. Father Steven Brice will be officiating. Visitation will begin on Thursday, May 1, 2008 beginning at 4:00 PM and lasting until 8:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. Entombment will follow the funeral mass at Restlawn Mausoleum.
Mike's family would like to express their thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Aspirus Hospice Care for the kind attention they provided Mike during his fifty-eight day stay in the hospital.
