Minnie was a uniquely creative and joy-filled person, whose smile touched and warmed all she encountered. She was full of grace for herself and other people. She loved nature and crafts; and was a scrabble player extraordinaire.
She was born in Lincoln County, KS, the daughter of the late Carl and Marie (Bausch) Oetting. Minnie taught elementary school for 6 years, prior to marrying the Reverend Gilbert J. Meyer on May 31, 1944, at American Lutheran Church, Tescott, KS.
Together Minnie and Gilbert shared 63 years as partners in life, nurturing their family; and partners in Gilbert’s career as a pastor. She was an integral part of his success and enjoyed leadership in church activities.
After Gilbert’s retirement from St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Wausau, they spent many happy years together with family and friends at Forest Park Village, Wausau; and wintered in Texas. Recently, Minnie moved to Madison, WI, to be closer to her daughter and son.
Minnie Marie Meyer, 90, of Madison, formerly of Wausau, passed away July 18, 2010, with her family by her side, at HospiceCare, Inc., Madison.
She will be sadly missed by her family, including 5 children, Connie (Stanley) Weisner, Oakland, CA, Sandra (Thomas) Leffler, Houston, TX, Steven (Peggy) Meyer, Madison, JoAnn (Gary) Nishiura, Madison, and Gregory (Kristen) Meyer, Minneapolis, MN; 12 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sister, Esther Dengler, Colorado Springs, CO; and sister-in-law, Olinda Niemi, West Bend, WI.
Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Gilbert, in 2007; brother, Melvin “Bud” Meyer; and sister, Doris Smith.
A funeral service celebrating Minnie’s life will be held at noon, Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Wausau. The Reverend Gary Froseth will officiate. Family will receive guests beginning at 10:30 a.m., the day of the service, at church.
