Norman was born September 9, 1927, the son of the late August and Adella (Zellmer) Krueger, in Tomahawk, WI. The family moved to Wausau when Norman was an infant and he graduated from Wausau Senior High, where he was an active musician as a part of the Top Hatters. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and after an honorable discharge became a lifelong member of the VFW Burns Post #388. Norm continued to serve his country, joining the Army National Guard as a member of the Red Arrow Division; he retired as a Master Sergeant in the 1960s.
On September 15, 1956, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Friedl. Norman had a dedicated career as a railroad engineer for Milwaukee Road. He was very active in the railroad labor movement and served as the General Chairman of the United Transportation Union in the 1970s. He retired in 1986, after 40 years of service. After living in Wausau for most of his life, he moved to King, WI, to the Veterans Home, in 2003, where he spent the last 6 years.
Norman’s life was one of dedication to the people and things that were important to him. He took time to enjoy and raise his family while being active in the community. Volunteering for hospice was a passion of his, devoting over 15,000 hours to many families in need over the years. He was a founding member of the Alano Club in Wausau, committing himself to helping others through fellowship. Norman was an avid outdoorsman, and spent many hours fishing on the Willow Flowage and enjoying the scenery throughout Northern Wisconsin.
