Robert "Bob" Nieuwenhuis, 85, of Wausau passed away on Friday, October 21, 2016 at Aspirus Hospice House, surrounded by his family.

He was born October 12, 1931 in Hortonville to the late Ben and Theresa (Stadler) Nieuwenhuis. Bob grew up in Wausau where he attended Wausau High. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Bob was a member of the American Legion Montgomery-Plant-Dudley Post #10 and Life Member of VFW Burn Post #388. On July 30, 1955 Bob married Dorothy Bender at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Wausau. Bob worked at, and retired from Wausau Papers, Brokaw. The family enjoyed their cottage in Hazelhurst where you could always find Bob fishing. Bob enjoyed hunting, golfing, bowling and excelled as a pitcher in baseball in his youth and later softball playing until the age of 82.

Bob is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Wausau, three children, David (Laurie) of Wausau, Dan (Ginger) of Mosinee, Dawn (Dan) Detert of Wausau, nine grandchildren, Krystal, D.J., Dana, Jessica, Jason, Dylan, Drew, Halee and Carli, four great grandchildren, Mason, Caden, Hannah and Wyatt, two brothers, Tom (Bette), Dick (Margaret) and one sister, Elaine (Doc) Knapp all of Wausau. Bob was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard and Leonard and five sisters, Dorothy, LaVern, Germaine, Sister Berna and Yvonne.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at St. Anne Parish, 700 W. Bridge St. Father Nate Kuhn will officiate. Entombment will be in Memorial Chapel Mausoleum at Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Full military rites will be presented by VFW Burns Post #388. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Tuesday at Helke Funeral Home, 302 Spruce St., Wausau and at the church on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until Mass begins.
