Roger Leon Beckman, 82, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, April 23, 2015 after a valiant 9-year battle with Stage 4 cancer and advanced COPD. He passed peacefully with his granddaughter holding his hand.
Roger was born September 7, 1932 in Wausau to the late Theodore and Cora (Bazlen) Beckman. He was a lifelong resident of Wausau, growing up and working on the family dairy farm (Parkview Dairy) on Stewart Ave. where Super 8 currently is. He also worked part-time at the family's gas station, Beckman Standard Service, which is where McDonalds currently sits. His career at Marathon Electric spanned 42 years, and culminated with his retirement in 1995.
After a love-at-first-sight encounter with Margaret Kurth, Roger married the love of his life on April 25, 1953 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ. Their relationship of faithful love has been an inspiration to the family, and a wonderful heritage. They would've celebrated their 62nd anniversary this year.
Roger and Margaret enjoyed many years of camping together, fishing trips to Canada, annual trips to Florida to celebrate holidays with their daughter and her husband; traveling in their RV, attending Brewer baseball games, family get-togethers, cookouts and especially Christmases. They were faithful members and servants at Grace United Church of Christ their entire married life and had many long-time friends there.
Survivors include his loving wife, Margaret; four children, Jeffrey Beckman; Barbara (Gary) Schoenherr, both of Wausau; Ellen Beckman (Tom Carney) of Lake Worth, FL; and Nancy Meverden (Greg Behrendt) also of Wausau; six grandchildren: Becky Schoenherr (Andy) Jones, Amy (Stan) Thrall, Pam and Eric Schoenherr, Kimberly and Kelly Meverden; and two great-grand daughters, Katie and Karah Lysne. He is also survived by their dear friends and fishing partners, Ross and June Plant.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents and an older brother, Russell.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 11:00am at Grace United Church of Christ, 535 S. Third Ave, Wausau. Reverend Wayne Drueck will officiate. Entombment will be in the Garden of Eternal Rest Mausoleum at Restlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Monday afternoon 2-5pm at the church and again at 9:00am until the time of the service on Tuesday. You may sign our family guest book at helke.com.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Hamied Rezazadeh and the entire staff at the Aspirus Cancer Center and Oncology Dept in Aspirus Wausau Hospital. Their respectful, loving, tender care of our husband/father/grandpa was a deep comfort for us, and Roger's wish to pass away while in their care was granted.
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outer man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things that are seen, but at the things that are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things that are not seen are eternal. For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens" (2 Corinthians 4:17-5:1).
