Samuel Hess

September 14, 1924 — January 7, 2017

Samuel Ferdinand Hess, 92, of Wausau, died January 7, 2017 at Aspirus Hospice House. Sam was born on September 14, 1924, in Mauston, WI, the youngest of nine children of Gustav and Amelia (Derkee) Hess.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Asiatic Pacific Theater (Philippines/Japan) and in the Occupation Army of General Douglas MacArthur in Tokyo. He spent six years in the Army Reserve and is a member of the American Legion Post 10, Wausau.

He was a graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, receiving his B.S. degree in Agriculture Economics and Commerce. After graduation in January, 1949, he began working for the Antigo Production Credit Association. He later moved to Shawano and Wausau, completing nearly forty years of service with Farm Credit Services, when he retired in 1988. He served on various community and agricultural related organizations and elected offices at St. James, St. Mark, and Christ Lutheran Churches and the LCMS District Office.

On June 14, 1952, he married Elaine Stucky at Bethany Lutheran Church, Rice Lake, WI. She survives.

Three children also survive including: Steven (Laurie), Overland Park, KS, Lori Barton, Wausau, and Brian (Michelle), Appleton. Seven grandchildren including grandsons: Colin Hess, (fiancée, Gabriela), David Barton (Kelsey), Nicholas Hess, and Scott Hess. Granddaughters are: Robin Sunderland (Brody), Lauren Lamaster (Cory), Hannah Hess, and one great-granddaughter, Farrah Sunderland.

A celebration of Sam's life will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Townline Road, Wausau. Rev. David Wetmore and Rev. Rick Kelm will officiate. Entombment will be in Restlawn Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, town of Texas, with military honors. Visitation will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13 at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau, and from 10:00 a.m. until time of service on January 14, 2017, at the church.
