Selma Edna Zastrow, 95, of Wausau, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2015, at North Central Health Care – Evergreen Place. She was born to Carl and Ida (Smith) Moline on December 29, 1919 in Dovro Township, North Dakota.
She married Clarence Zastrow on June 7, 1941, in the town of Hamburg and they farmed together for 10 years. While farming she also made wedding cakes in the wood-burning stove. After their time on the farm Selma opened Zastrow's Jackson Street Café in 1952. It was at that time that Selma began her many years of service and friendships to many in the Wausau community. The café was open for 27 years and Selma's apple pies were what people remembered the most.
Selma was a very hard-working lady who loved feeding and watching the birds. Her home was filled with many bird clocks set to different times so she could hear the birds chirp throughout the day. She enjoyed being around children and animals, and she had a special love for her dog, Porschia. Selma also liked to spend her time watching NASCAR races, crocheting, embroidery, traveling out west, and working in her flower garden. Her relatives and friends enjoyed the benefits of her love for cooking and baking. She was famous for her pies, but she also made great cookies.
Over the years, Selma had many friends that she enjoyed and many of her employees remained friends even after the café closed.
Survivors include sisters, Delma Kozlowski and Rosella Garbbert; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; parents, Carl and Ida; brothers, Thermin Anderson and Daniel Moline; and sisters, Lorena Wright and Doris Cross.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2015, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 426 Washington St., Wausau, with Rev. Philip Schneider officiating. Family and friends may call beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, town of Hamburg.
You may sign the family guestbook at www.helke.com.
A special thank you to the staff of North Central Health Care and Evergreen Place for the wonderful care Selma received.
