Steven Smith

Steven M. Smith, 64, of Wausau, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, February 7, 2013. Steve was born on April 19th, 1948, to Howard "Billy" and Martha (Olien) Smith, and was raised in New Richmond, Wisconsin. After high school, Steve attended UW-Eau Claire to become a teacher, and then taught high school history classes on the Iron Range in northern Minnesota and in Butternut, Wisconsin. In 1971, Steve met his wonderful future wife, Susan Augustine. Steve and Sue were married in Oconto, on September 23, 1972, then moved to Wausau where Steve worked as an IBM service technician for over 34 years.
Steve's family was his number one priority; he always loved and valued the time he spent with them. He enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends. While enjoying retirement, Steve took many road trips with Sue and attended numerous courses at UW-Marathon County. He will be remembered for many things, including his unquenchable search for knowledge and great love of books and reading. Steve enjoyed the outdoors and was often seen walking around Wausau and loved hiking up Rib Mountain. Steve served his community as an AARP Tax Aid volunteer and was involved with a book club.
Steve is survived by his wife, Sue; children, Jack (Nicole) Smith and Colleen Smith (Dr. Bill Balco); mother, Martha Smith; brother, Jeff (Anne) Smith; sister, Dr. Susan Smith; and mother-in-law, Mary Augustine.
He was preceded in death by his father, Howard "Billy" Smith; and father-in-law, Donald Augustine.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau, with Deacon Greg Kaiser officiating. Family and friends are welcome to visit Monday, February 11, beginning at 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Helke Funeral Home and again on Tuesday beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place at a later date.
