Theodore W. Salwach, 93, of Wausau passed away Monday, April 14, 2014 at Benedictine Manor surrounded by his family.
He was born July 28, 1920 in Owen to the late Frank and Wladyslawa (Wojciechowski) Salwach. Ted helped out on the family farm. At the age of 20, Ted enlisted in the U.S. Army, Canon Company 60th Infantry during WWII under the command of General George Patton. Ted fought in the Battle of the Bulge, the invasion of Normandy and was wounded in Germany. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant and presented with the Purple Heart, the American Defense Service Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon and the Combat Infantry Badge.
After his discharge, Ted met Lucille Strzok of Thorp. They were married October 6, 1948 at St. Hedwig Catholic Church, Thorp. Moving to Marshfield, Ted was employed at Rollohome Corp. as a foreman. In 1963, he began working for Land O' Lakes in Spencer and retired in 1985 from UW Wood County in Marshfield.
Ted was an active member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church helping at Summerfun and many funeral lunches. He enjoyed traveling with Lucille, woodworking, watching the Packers and reading western novels. You could always tell Ted's yard by the way he kept it meticulously groomed. His favorite past times were listening and dancing to Polkas. He was his grandchildrens' biggest fan watching them in curling, tennis, basketball and baseball.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille of Wausau, two daughters, Juliana (William) Franzen of Wausau, Deborah Lynn (Kenneth) Wolfe of Wausau, three grandchildren, Shaina and Hillary Franzen, Andrew Wolfe and one sister, Angie Persick of New Berlin. Ted was preceded in death by three sisters, Victoria Szymanski, Bernice Roll and Lillian Benedyk.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 21, 2014 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 1104 S. 9th Ave., Wausau. Father Tom Huff will officiate. Full military honors will be provided by VFW Burns Post #388 immediately following the mass. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.
