Verna Mais

Verna M. Mais, 94, of Wausau died February 24, 2014 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Aspirus Hospice House.

Verna was born January 10, 1920 in the Town of Berlin to the late Arthur and Ida (Voigt) Fehlhaber. She was baptized on January 20, 1920 and confirmed on May 6, 1934. She married Walter "Wally" B. Mais on September 2, 1939, at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church, Town of Berlin. The couple owned and operated Wally's Auto Body Shop in Rib Mountain for 37 years. Verna was a faithful member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church since 1945. Over the years, Verna enjoyed working in her flower gardens and was a meticulous dresser.

Survivors include one son, Jerome (Paula) Mais of Rockford, IL; one daughter, Joanne (Paul) Thies of Divide, CO; grandchildren, Kareen (Anthony) DiTullio of Rockford, IL, Jennifer (Johnathan) Kuss of Rockford, IL, and Matthew Thies of Destin, FL; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Edna (Roy) Zimmer of Florence, OR; and one brother-in-law, Ferdinand (Dorothy) Mais.

Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, with whom she lovingly shared 69 years; brothers, Clairmont, Eldon, and Earl; and sisters, Dorothy and Nina; and step-sister, Elaine Suchon.

A funeral service celebrating Verna's life will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, March 1st at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Wausau. The Reverend Alan Schaffmeyer will officiate. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 AM until the time of services at the church. The Helke Funeral Home, Wausau, assisted the family with arrangements. Entombment will be in Restlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
