Virgil G. Strehlow was a dedicated son, brother, and uncle. His strong Christian faith sustained him throughout his life and comforted him in his recent illness.
At the age of 70, Virgil, of Rothschild, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2010 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice at the Hospice House in Wausau.
Virgil was born March 10, 1939 in Wausau to the late Arwin and Angela (Christian) Strehlow. The family moved to Milwaukee where he graduated from Washington High School. Virgil received a bachelor’s degree from UW-Stevens Point in English education and conservation. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Iceland and Michigan and was honorably discharged at the rank of Captain. Virgil taught English in northern Wisconsin, worked in Milwaukee for ten years, and moved to Rothschild in 1977. He enjoyed his work in banking and at title companies in the Wausau area.
Virgil was an avid genealogist and member of the Marathon County Genealogy Society. He complied information for the Genealogy Society on the early residents of Marathon County. Reading, gardening, an occasional trip “up north” to fish, enjoying time spent with family, and listening to music were other favorite past times. He was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Wausau.
Virgil is survived by one sister, Marilyn Strehlow of Rothschild; two brothers, Arwin (Gloria) of Houston, TX and James (Marlene) of Rothschild. He is further survived by nieces, Carla (Kevin) Aldrich and their children, Bryan and Brianna of Rothschild, Lynne Strehlow and her son, Derek of Wausau, and Lisa (Chris) Marquardt and their son, Isaac of Wausau and Stacy (Joe) Perkinson of Houston, TX; nephew, Kevin (Jessica) Strehlow and their son, Jackson of Houston; and many more extended family and dear friends.
